2/29/2024 Dear Shrub Oak Park Community Association residents, We hope you have had a healthy and productive start to the year. Things have continued to move along in the community and we hope you have noticed some positive changes, not the least of which was the repaving of the roads which the SOPCA Board advocated for strongly in the past couple of years. Please continue to drive cautiously on the newly paved roads as we have many children, pets, and loved ones that walk on our roads. Other projects that were completed in 2023 were the repair of the wall on the north side of the dam to remediate the flood damage that had occurred. A platform was also built to prevent future erosion damage. Dead and decaying trees were removed from the park and free cut wood was made available to the community by the tree cutting company. Additionally, 7 large trees were planted along Oak Knoll and 200 DEC seedlings were planted throughout the park in an effort to curb further erosion and attract birds and pollinators. More work is planned for 2024. Some of this work will include resurfacing the dam and fixing the south side of the dam wall in a similar fashion to what was done on the north side to help prevent further erosion damage. The walkway over the culvert will be raised to allow better drainage and water flow. We plan to backfill the edges of the new black top curbs and reseed as needed. We will also continue with plantings as needed, including another batch of DEC seedlings. We welcome all the new families and residents that have joined our community recently. If all members of the community would assist us in having an up to date communication list, it would be appreciated. If you feel more comfortable, you can email your name and address to the secretary: sopcasecretary@gmail.com Please remember that town code prohibits on-street parking overnight during winter months. Additionally, trash cans should not be left out longer than the evening before garbage collection. We have many wild animals in the area that are tempted by garbage being left out. Similarly, please bring your trash cans in from the curb the same day the garbage is collected. On windy days trash cans get blown around and can be a traffic hazard. As Spring approaches, the park is a wonderful place to play and picnic in. Please note that our park is not an area for public gatherings without specific permission from the SOPCA Board and the Town of Yorktown. The park is not to be used for anything other than short term recreation. Thank you for working as a community to keep our park clean and safe for our community. If you see or hear suspicious behavior, please call the Yorktown Police to report it. You may have heard that there has been an uptick in car break-ins and other activity recently. It’s always a good practice to keep your cars locked and valuables out of sight. We appreciate being notified of incidents, but the police should be called if you have concerns. Thank you for helping to keep our community safe. The Board meets 4 times a year and the dates for our meetings are: April 27 June 22 August 10 October 5 All meetings are held in the park starting at 11 AM and last about an hour. All community members are welcome to attend the meetings. Note that there will not be any rain date this year as it leads to confusion when the weather is uncertain. Since the meetings are held during warm months, we can all bring our umbrellas if need be. We hope to see you at our next meeting. Sincerely, The Shrub Oak Park Board All community residents: Please scan the QR code below to share your contact information:
